Tips for Bartering
 

1. Bartering can be an enjoyable experience when both parties are satisfied.

2. Bartering makes sense when expectations are fulfilled. Therefore, establish concrete expectations in order to establish a positive outcome for yourself.

3. After barter has been complete, make sure you establish a record of the transaction. The record should include but not limited to barter participant, date of the barter, value of the barter and contact information.

4. Effective communications before, during, and after the barter will lead to a mutually satisfied barter event.

5. Make sure you provide detail information regarding your bartering product. A full disclosure of what you are bartering will eliminate the possibly of an unfair barter.

6. Barter on reputable web sites.

7. A contract agreement should be included in the bartering. This will minimize any legal hassles subsequent to the barter.

8. Very important, if you barter your products or services through a barter exchange, you should receive a Form 1099-B. “Bartering” is your barter transactions proceeds and is generally reportable as income and must be included on your tax return.

9. Build relationships with other traders although you did not make a trade because it is possible that your new relationship can lead to further bartering although you may not be directly involved or you may get a referral.

10. If you can barter locally, do so since the parties will be in the same community or close by.
